Although it is better known as Cardo Mariano, Cardo de Santa Maria, or Cardo Lechal, among others, Silybum Marianum (scientific name) has Silymarin as its active ingredient.

Milk thistle is a plant that grows throughout the Mediterranean and was introduced to the United Kingdom by herbalists in the 16th century.

At that time it was used to protect yourself: from insect and snake bites, serve as an anti-inflammatory and for digestion disorders such as those related to the liver and gallbladder.

Silymarin is composed of three isomers called silybin, silidanin, and silycristin, all of which are classified as flavonolignans, with silybin being the most important component. Milk thistle is a member of the sunflower family, with purple flowers and milky white leaves. It flowers from June to August, and they are collected at the end of summer.
