Nutmeg is the fruit of a large tree native to the Moluccas. It arrived in Europe in the Middle Ages through the Arab trade. The Portuguese had a monopoly on this spice until the Dutch took the island and controlled the nutmeg trade. It was known for its digestive and stimulating properties. It was used in the Middle Ages to eliminate bad smells in the streets and the Egyptians used it to embalm the dead along with other aromatics. The essential oil is extracted mainly from the nut but also from the mace or skin that surrounds the nut.
